RAFAEL BEJARANO, HOME JOURNEY, WINNER: “She’s got a lot of natural speed. I didn’t send her; I took hold and tried to get her to go slow and to relax. When we crossed the dirt, I had enough horse to win it.”GARY STEVENS, GO WEST MARIE, SECOND: “I thought they’d go a little quicker with Tyler’s fill (Heavens Stairway) in there and Maldonado’s filly (Unforgettable U) – I thought she might show more speed. It just didn’t develop, and I know I couldn’t change my filly’s style. When I asked her, there was just too much work to be done, and Rafael was able to give his horse a little breather – he didn’t even have to ask his horse until inside the eighth pole, and I knew I was running for second at that point. His filly’s gotten so good. She’ll win a graded race.”TRAINER QUOTES JOCKEY QUOTES MIKE PUYPE, HOME JOURNEY, WINNER: “She ran really fast last time and just got nailed. Today, she slowed it down a little bit, she kicked, and she ran a good race.”Noted he’s been winning more frequently lately: “We had a lot of seconds and thirds, but sooner or later they can turn into wins, and my numbers have found real good balance after this past week. We won one last Sunday and four this week, we got another one tomorrow.”Next race? “We’ll just have to see where to go. We sent her to a different dollar value today, winning a graded stakes, so that’s always big for a filly or mare.” MARK GIARDINO, CO-OWNER & BREEDER, HOME JOURNEY: HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE WINNING YOUR FIRST GRADED STAKES AS AN OWNER/BREEDER?: “It was worth it. We’ve been trying for a long time, over 25 years.”DARYLE ANN GIARDINO, CO-OWNER & BREEDER, HOME JOURNEY: “This is wonderful. My dad (famous actor, Slim Pickens) and mom loved the race horses. When I was a kid, Farrell Jones was our trainer.”EDDIE TRUMAN, GO WEST MARIE, SECOND: “I’m so happy with her. There was no pace in the race. That’s a nice filly. She’s got so much gas, and if something doesn’t go with her, how are you going to come from seven lengths off? My filly just ran her eyeballs out – she just ran so good. But you gotta have some pace. I’m proud of her, though – she ran her race.” NOTES: The winning owners are Mark Giardino of Las Vegas (GGG Stables) or Russell Sarno of West Lake Village, CA.-30-
14 April 2005A huge blow has been struck against cellphone theft in South Africa with the signing of an agreement between the country’s cellular service providers, Business Against Crime and the SA Police Service that will render all reported stolen cellphones useless. The agreement by Cell C, MTN and Vodacom to blacklist stolen, lost and damaged cellphones will both help stamp out cellphone theft and curtail the use of cellphones in criminal activities. From now on, a cellphone reported stolen will not be able to make or receive calls, even with a different SIM card. Criminals will also no longer be able to change the identity of a stolen handset by altering its unique 15-digit IMEI (international mobile equipment identity) number.Where a serious crime has been committed using a cellphone, the police and the service provider will work together in tracing the phone and user.National Police Commissioner Jackie Selebi told journalists in Pretoria on Wednesday that combating cellphone theft required an integrated approach.“The initiative will stop organised crime syndicates in their tracks and will render stolen, lost and damaged cellphones inactive in the hands of criminals”, Selebi said.Selebi warned that the police would also be targeting pawnshops dealing in stolen cellphones, saying they would be required to point out the sources of their phones. He added that the police could now request that a particular cellphone not be blacklisted in order to facilitate ongoing investigations. How to blacklist your phoneNotify your service provider of the loss or theft:Cell C: phone 140 or 084 140 from any other network.MTN: phone 173 (pay-as-you-go users), 808 (contract subscribers) or 083 1173 / 1808 from any other network.Vodacom: phone 111 or 082 111 from a landline. After verifying your particulars, your service provider will blacklist your phone and provide you with a blacklisting reference number. You must then report the loss or theft to the police, providing them with the blacklisting number.SouthAfrica.info reporter
Get the Free eBook! Learn how to sell without a sales manager. Download my free eBook! You need to make sales. You need help now. We’ve got you covered. This eBook will help you Seize Your Sales Destiny, with or without a manager. Download Now I had to deal with a few tough business situations over the last few weeks and months. This comes with the territory when you are in business. It’s also an upper limit on your success in business, your willingness and ability to deal with bigger challenges increasing the upper limit on your success, and an unwillingness or inability providing a sort of cap.My strategy is, was, and always will be to deal with the biggest, foulest, and most difficult challenge before I do anything else. There are a couple of reasons I find this valuable. First, it feels like offense. It feels like you are taking initiative and capturing the momentum. Second, it provides a sense of control. Even if you can’t control the outcome, you are controlling what you do and when you do it. You are off your back foot and onto your front foot.Having taken action and having done something prevents you from having to carry the issue around with you for the rest of the day, and it allows you to shift your focus to opportunities instead of problems or challenges. There is more to this than what I have written here. As a businessperson, you have two kinds of challenges. The first set of challenges are issues that are going to be resolved over the short term. They are problems that need your attention, but at some point, they will cease to be, either being resolved in your favor or resolved in a way that isn’t great for you but also isn’t an existential threat. These problems get your attention because they are stressful and come with a bit of conflict. We’ll call these Type 1 problems and challenges. The second set of challenges you face are different. They are not short-term problems, but larger, systematic problems. These problems and challenges aren’t going to be resolved very quickly, and the conflict around these challenges tend to be internal, things like your strategy for acquiring clients, a shift in the competitive landscape, the impact of changes in the economy, increased client expectations, and the creation of profitable growth. Let’s call these Type 2 problems and challenges. They are more important over the long run than your Type 1 problems, but they lack the sense of urgency. The reason to take action on your Type 1 problems before you do anything else, is because once you have done what you can do in that day, you can shift your focus to the Type 2 problems, knowing that the Type 1 problem will eventually be resolved. The more difficult, more persistent, and more challenging Type 2 problem is what deserves your real focus. You have an angry client. You need to do something about that, even though it isn’t going to be pleasant. Dispatch that Type 1 problem by making that call first. Then move on to the Type 2 problem of acquiring enough opportunities to build a pipeline that ensures your success.
Former Kolkata Mayor Sovan Chatterjee, who is being investigated for cash-on-camera scam, said politics and probe are not connected and that he can serve the BJP while being probed by the central agencies. Mr. Chatterjee, once the top confidant of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, had joined the BJP last week. He addressed a press conference at the BJP office in Kolkata on Tuesday with party’s State president Dilip Ghosh by his side. In 2014, Mr. Chatterjee was seen in videos along with other Trinamool Congress leaders purportedly accepting cash on camera. On the ongoing Naradaprobe by the central agencies, Mr. Chatterjee said a probe did not mean that he was guilty. “Probes by ED and CBI are ordered by the Supreme Court. There is a huge difference between being accused and proven guilty. It is not correct to link the investigation to political decisions which people are making,” he said. ‘Loyal soldier’ Responding to questions on whether he will contest against Ms. Banerjee, Mr Chatterjee said he will do whatever the BJP asks him to do. “When I was in Trinamool, I was a loyal soldier of that party. Now I have joined the BJP and will remain its loyal soldier. I will do whatever my party asks me to do. If they ask me to contest against Mamata Banerjee in next election, I will do so,” he said.
Donor organizations within the Jamaican diaspora have been urged to work together to better stream line their contributions to Jamaica. The call has come from Jamaica’s Consul General to New York, Mr. Herman Lamont, who delivered the keynote address at the 3rd annual banquet and awards ceremony of the Help Jamaica Medical Mission (Help JAMM), in Verona, New Jersey on November 9.“I want to appeal for an enhanced level of collaboration among all donor groups in the Diaspora, so that we may have a better synergy in our activities,” Mr. Lamont told the Help JAMM members and supporters gathered at the Richfield Regency hotel. He said that if the various donations were properly streamlined, Jamaica would benefit tremendously. “From time to time, organizations have complained that they continue to experience difficulty making donations, but this can be mitigated if there is a co-ordinated effort,” the Consul General said.Mr. Lamont commended Help JAMM for providing free quality health care to needy persons in both New Jersey and Jamaica. “Jamaicans at home proudly appreciate these donations and I unhesitatingly express our gratitude,” he added.Jamaicans in the Diaspora, he said, are replete with unsung heroes who over the years have willingly contributed financial resources, equipment, as well as professional skills and services to individuals and institutions alike. “Volunteerism within the Jamaican diaspora is truly inspiring. This quality found among Jamaicans overseas is almost commonplace and is worthy of emulation at home,” Mr. Lamont said.He pointed out that medical facilities in Jamaica continue to face challenges as they strive to meet the needs of the growing population.Just over 400 persons attended the event and money raised from the banquet will go towards defraying the costs of the Medical Mission to Jamaica.
