Is Polaroid planning on resurrecting their iconic instant camera next CES

first_imgPolaroid has lost a lot of its credibility in recent years when it comes to competing with the likes of Canon, Nikon and Panasonic when it comes to new consumer digicams… a decline which seems to equally match the rise in hipster cache that Polaroid has gained from the nostalgia felt for their old instant film cameras. It looks likely that Polaroid is now planning on exploiting that hipster cache and nostalgia to reinvigorate their modern camera business: the company has sent out a teaser to tech journalists promoting an exclusive event at CES 2011 next month at which they are set to reveal a brand new camera… and if you adjust the gamma on the image just so, you can see that the camera they are teasing in the promotional shot has some sort of slot.It seems pretty obvious based on this that Polaroid’s going to be releasing a new instant camera. It’s easy to understand why: with Polaroid instant film costing 20 bucks a pack, and stores sprouting up that exclusively sell old Polaroid instant cameras at truly insane prices, there’s a market here to capitalize upon… albeit an extremely misguided market that mistakes technical obsolescence coupled with inconvenience as delightful whimsy. It’ll be interesting to see whether or not Polaroid’s new instant camera can be successful, once a new model supplants consumer nostalgia for the extinct original.Read more at Engadgetlast_img read more
