Patten will speak and receive an honorary degree on May 18 at the University’s 169th Commencement.“Chris Patten’s global experiences and expertise — from higher education, to government service to the broadcast media — are remarkable and sure to resonate with our graduates,” University President Fr. John Jenkins said. “We have had the honor of hosting him on our campus in the past, and we are so pleased that he has accepted our invitation to return and address the class of 2014.”Courtesy James Yuanxin Li Patten, who was bestowed the title of baron in 2005, was elected chancellor of Oxford in 2003, and previously served as chancellor of Newcastle University. Queen Elizabeth appointed Patten in 2011 as chair of the BBC Trust, the governing body of the British Broadcasting Corp.Patten graduated from Balliol College, Oxford, where he studied history. He began his career in the Conservative Party’s research department, first as a desk officer and then as director. He was elected as a Member of Parliament for Bath in 1979 and served for 27 years as minister for overseas development in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and in the Cabinet as secretary of state for the environment.In July 2002, he was named the 28th and final governor of Hong Kong until its handover to the People’s Republic of China in 1997. In 1998 he chaired the Independent Commission on Policing for Northern Ireland for one year, set up under the Good Friday Peace Agreement, and from 1999 to 2004, was one of the United Kingdom’s two members to the European Commission.“One of Britain’s and world’s preeminent Catholics, Lord Patten was called upon by his government to help resolve some of the most daunting issues on the world stage, including his masterful governance of Hong Kong’s transition from British to Chinese rule, and his groundbreaking reforms of policing in Northern Ireland,” Jenkins said. “Many thought impossible the preservation of Hong Kong’s prosperity in the face of communism, just as others deemed unattainable police reform in a society so long divided by sectarian prejudice and violence.“Lord Patten proved the doubters wrong.”In 2010, the prime minister tapped Patten to direct the preparations for Pope Benedict XVI’s visit to the United Kingdom, the country’s first papal visit in almost 20 years. He has been recognized as one of Britain’s most influential Catholics.
Japan Drilling Company (JDC) has informed that its recently built jack-up rig has started drilling for Pertamina in Indonesia.The jack-up rig “HAKURYU-14” / Image Copyright: Japan Drilling Co.,Ltd.According to JDC, its HAKURYU-14 jack-up rig started the drilling operation based on the contract with PT Pertamina Hulu Mahakam on December 6 at Mahakam Block, Republic of Indonesia.Offshore Energy Today reported in August, based on VesselsValue data, that Pertamina had hired the Hakuryu-14 jack-up drilling rig on a one-year term.Hakuryu-14 is a 400-feet operating water depth self-elevating cantilever jack-up drilling rig, built by PPL Shipyard Pte. Ltd. in 2018 using a Baker Marine Design.This is the newest rig in JDC’s fleet, delivered in January this year. The company is still waiting for the delivery of one rig, the Hakuryu-15. The contract for the construction of the rig was awarded to Sembcorp Marine’s PPL Shipyard in November 2014.Also, while Pertamina has started drilling, one other operator in Indonesia, Ophir Energy, has completed an exploration well there. Ophir on Friday confirmed it had made a gas discovery at its Paus Biru-1 exploration in the Sampang PSC offshore Indonesia.The well has been plugged and abandoned as a gas discovery and plan of development will now be prepared for submission to the regulator for approval, Ophir said.Offshore Energy Today Staff
A Miramar teenager is in jail after allegedly drugging and raping a 15-year-old girl before uploading a video of her naked to his Instagram story.Jorge Martinez, 18, has been charged with sexual battery, giving a controlled substance to a minor and making or publishing child pornography.The 15-year-old girl is in a coma and fighting for her life, according to police.According to the arrest report, the victim had a party at her house on Monday where a witness said Martinez gave her two Percocet pills.After the party, several guests, including the victim, went to the suspect’s house.Martinez later posted a video to his Instagram story where a naked, unconscious girl is seen in the background, according to the arrest report.Martinez could be heard saying he had sex with her but, “The Perc got her knocked out bro,” according to police.One of the victim’s friends saw the video, recognized 15-year-old, and began searching for her.Shortly after, the 15-year-old was found unconscious with blue lips and transported to Palmetto General Hospital.She was later airlifted to Nicklaus Children’s Hospital where she remains in “very critical” condition, according to officials.Police say the suspect admitted he was with the victim and posted the video onto his social media.Martinez appeared before a judge in Fort Lauderdale Thursday morning and is being held on $550,000 bond.
