St Andrew Hockey celebrates 75 years

first_imgThe St Andrew Hockey Club – the oldest existing women’s club in Jamaica, is celebrating 75 years and in honour of this special occasion, the club will be hosting the St Andrew Cup mixed tournament November 19-20 at the Mona Hockey Field. After a successful launch last Thursday that saw a huge turnout from participating teams, sponsors and well-wishers it’s now down to the business end of things this weekend. The tournament sponsored by Toyota Jamaica, Jamaica National, Avis, Home and garden Care limited, Art and Fabric Co Ltd and Image One will transform the Mona Hockey Field this weekend. The eight teams vying for the inaugural championship title are placed in two groups. Group One consist of Eagles, St Andrew Hockey Club, Sharpe’s Rebels Hockey Club and Papine Strikers. Group Two has Tropical Circus, Munex, Inferno and Mighty Dragon. The tournament will provide local clubs with the opportunity to form competitive mixed teams that will be vying for the right to be crowned St Andrew Cup champions. The participants will be members of the local Hockey fraternity who will compete in eight teams. All the teams are compact with an abundance of talent, some with a host of past and present national representatives on show. This competition the first of its kind in Jamaica will be of a highly competitive nature and is a precursor for the international tournament, teams will be vying for the Myrna Brown championship trophy and over $60,000 in cash prizes.
