Atlas Jewellery, which has been in the headlines recently following the arrest of its founder M M Ramachandran for defaulting on repayment of loans worth over Rs 900 crore, is scheduled to hold an annual general meeting on 28 September. The AGM will see a ‘special notice’ to expel members Lukoo Sugunan Madathiparambil and Ajith Kovooril Muraleedharan from the board of directors. The move comes after Madathiparambil and Muraleedharan alleged that their appointment to the board happened “without their knowledge”. Both of them said that “they were just small-time employees”.Madathiparambil was just a Class X pass out carrying out small-time administrative work at Atlas Jewellery while Muraleedharan’s educational qualification was just Plus-II, Indian Express reported. The company had claimed that Muraleedharan possessed a graduate degree in IT with over six years of experience.Atlas Jewellery has decided to replace the duo with Supratik Chatterjee and Sunil Pant. While Chatterjee has more than 36 years of experience in banking and held various positions at top public sector banks in India, Pant has over 37 years of experience in banking sector. In the recent post he held, Pant worked as the chief general manager of SBI at its corporate office in Mumbai. The company took back its decision to re-appoint Shrirang Vasant Khadilkar as a non-executive independent director following his recent resignation from the board.Surprisingly, the AGM notice to shareholders did not mention anything about the arrest of Ramachandran and the debt he owes to banks.

By AFRO StaffOn Aug. 13, the Baltimore City Recreation and Parks (BCRP) reopened the popular Harlem Park Recreation Center, at 700 N. Calhoun St., in West Baltimore. The reopening of Harlem Park brings the city’s rec center total to 44.In collaboration with the University of Maryland Medical Center, the center has been restored and renovated to include new lighting, books, games and sporting equipment, an upgraded multipurpose room, among other updates. Community members, partners and members of the press were among the attendees at the grand reopening. This is the first time the Harlem Park Recreation Center has operated since its closing in 2012.<span data-mce-type=”bookmark” style=”display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;” class=”mce_SELRES_start”></span>“Returning this essential community asset to the residents of Harlem Park has been a priority of mine since I was City Council President and I am proud that as Mayor I will be able to return this jewel to the community,” said Mayor Bernard C. “Jack” Young. “This new facility will be a gathering space for the neighborhood and a safe haven for its youth. Reflecting my commitment to rebuild our neighborhoods and provide positive recreational engagement for our residents.”Pop-up programs will take place beginning Aug. 14 and the center will operate Monday’s, Wednesday’s and Friday’s 10 a.m.-9 p.m. and Tuesday’s and Thursday’s 5-9 p.m. The center will be fully operational beginning September 2019 with youth and adult programs, volunteer opportunities, sports leagues, out-of-school learning, summer camp and much more. Starting Labor Day Weekend, all city recreation centers will operate Monday through Saturday.Harlem Park Recreation Center, Baltimore, MD (Screengrab YouTube) “The restoration of this center has been a long time coming,” said Reginald Moore, executive director of Baltimore City Recreation & Parks. “We’ve listened to the surrounding communities to not only bring back the Harlem Park Rec Center, but to provide recreational opportunities tailored to their needs. We are thankful to partners like the UMMC for the importance of enriching our communities through recreation and working alongside our dedicated staff to bring back one of its community staples.”
“The industry is on a positive path of recovery but it’s very clear that the race is far from won,” she continued. “Record companies are continuing in their efforts to put the industry back onto a stable path and, to that end, we are continuing our campaign to fix the value gap. This is not just essential for music to thrive in today’s global market, but to create the right – fair – environment for it to do so in the future.” Although 2017 was the industry’s third consecutive year of growth after 15 years of significant decline, the year’s revenues are still just 68.4% of the market’s peak in 1999. Internationally, Latin American revenues grew by 17.7% and Asia and Australasia by 5.4%.As it did in past years, the report singles out the “value gap” — particularly with regard to what the organization considers low royalty payments from YouTube — as the largest single threat to the industry’s sustained growth. It illustrates this discrepancy with a graphic illustrating that the 272 million users of paid and ad-supported audio streams generated $5.569 billion in 2017, while 1.3 billion users of video streams generated just $856 million.“Record companies remain dedicated to ensuring full and fair value is returned for music as it is consumed in its many different forms around the world,” the report reads. “Crucially, this involves finding a legislative solution to the value gap, the mismatch between the value created by some digital platforms from their use of music and what they pay to those creating and investing in it.“Inconsistent applications of online liability laws have emboldened certain digital platforms to claim that they are not liable for the music they make available to the public,” it continues. “Today, services such as YouTube, which have developed into sophisticated on-demand music platforms, use this as a shield to avoid licensing music like other digital services do, claiming they are not legally responsible for the music they distribute on their site. Legislative action is needed to ensure that laws on copyright liability are applied correctly and consistently, so that platforms cannot claim they do not need to be licensed to distribute music. The music community is united in calling for policymakers to take action.”IFPI CEO Frances Moore’s comments reflected both cautious optimism and warning. “It’s been another incredibly exciting year for music. The work and investment from record companies is enabling brilliant, diverse artists to break through to fans around the world, soundtracking their lives and bringing them increasingly rich and immersive ways to enjoy the music they love. ×Actors Reveal Their Favorite Disney PrincessesSeveral actors, like Daisy Ridley, Awkwafina, Jeff Goldblum and Gina Rodriguez, reveal their favorite Disney princesses. Streaming now accounts for 38.4% of total recorded music revenue and its growth has more than offset a 5.4% decline in physical revenue and a 20.5% decline in download revenue. Total digital income last year accounted for more than half of all revenue (54%) for the first time.
