The St Andrew Hockey Club – the oldest existing women’s club in Jamaica, is celebrating 75 years and in honour of this special occasion, the club will be hosting the St Andrew Cup mixed tournament November 19-20 at the Mona Hockey Field. After a successful launch last Thursday that saw a huge turnout from participating teams, sponsors and well-wishers it’s now down to the business end of things this weekend. The tournament sponsored by Toyota Jamaica, Jamaica National, Avis, Home and garden Care limited, Art and Fabric Co Ltd and Image One will transform the Mona Hockey Field this weekend. The eight teams vying for the inaugural championship title are placed in two groups. Group One consist of Eagles, St Andrew Hockey Club, Sharpe’s Rebels Hockey Club and Papine Strikers. Group Two has Tropical Circus, Munex, Inferno and Mighty Dragon. The tournament will provide local clubs with the opportunity to form competitive mixed teams that will be vying for the right to be crowned St Andrew Cup champions. The participants will be members of the local Hockey fraternity who will compete in eight teams. All the teams are compact with an abundance of talent, some with a host of past and present national representatives on show. This competition the first of its kind in Jamaica will be of a highly competitive nature and is a precursor for the international tournament, teams will be vying for the Myrna Brown championship trophy and over $60,000 in cash prizes. Myrna Brown, who is a St Andrew Hockey Club life member, will be the patron of the tournament in honour of her service to the club for over half a century
Fall is in the air and a favorite geek holiday, Halloween, is just around the corner! There are so many ways to celebrate Halloween this season with all the horror movies, games, and comics out there. Another great way to celebrate is by checking out the spooky projects running on Kickstarter right now.One stand out project up on Kickstarter right now is Doctor Cthulittle, a prestige oversized hardcover, fully colored and illustrated book by authors G.D. Falksen and Mark Wheatley. It’s like Doctor Doolittle with an H.P. Lovecraft twist. Doctor Cthulittle himself is a strange character that has sacrificed his sanity to save the universe from the elder Gods that Lovecraft tried to warn us about. Joining up with the Doctor is his traveling companion, Zenobia, and his dog-man servant, Farnsworth. Together, they travel through space and time in a bathysphere protecting the universe. So yes, if you’re a fan of another Doctor, you definitely want to check out this book.Mark Wheatley has painted some absolutely gorgeous covers for the Doctor Who comics in addition to being a multi-award winning legendary artist and designer working in comics, television, and music with clients including Lady Gaga, Square Roots, and 2 Broke Girls. G.D. Falksen is a well-known steampunk author, public speaker, as well as being the model Disney used for Hans in Frozen. Don’t worry though, G.D. is not actually a villain in disguise. I mean, probably not. It’s only going to take $10,000 to fund Doctor Cthulittle with it’s 64 gorgeous painted pages and wildly inventive story harkening back to old Victorian adventure novels. They’re well over halfway past their goal and still have two weeks left to meet it. Help G.D. and Mark bring this story to life by backing this project for great rewards including digital and physical copies of the book, patches, prints, and even original art! The more they go over their goal, the more stretch goals they can unlike increasing the value of your pledge.Don’t let the eldritch horrors win! Back Doctor Cthulittle today!
