Linden business community encouraged to be tax-compliant

first_img…GRA hosts tax sensitisation campaignMembers of the Linden business community were encouraged to be tax compliant, as the Communication and Tax Advisory Services of the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) took the final leg of its Regional Tax Sensitisation Campaign into the Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice) community on Tuesday.Assistant Commissioner of VAT Audit and Enforcement Lavina Waldrond addressing a section of the gathering at the GRA Regional Tax Sensitisation Campaign in Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice)The objective of the exercise, which was hosted at the Linden Enterprise Network (LEN), was to promote taxpayer education and compliance. It was facilitated by a team of experts including Assistant Commissioner of Value Added Tax (VAT) Audit and Enforcement Lavina Waldrond, Tax Specialist Christopher Roberts, Representative of the Linden Integrated Regional Tax Office Ronesha Ajeday and Communication Officer Fabian Clowes.Speaking with this publication, Clowes stressed the importance of the exercise.“Each year we go across the country to talk to residents – individuals and corporate taxpayers, about what is new with the GRA, what we expect of them and what changes have taken place with the law that they should know about…it’s part of GRA’s mission to promote compliance through education. The mission is to promote compliance through service, enforcement and education,” he explained. Those in attendance were educated on topics such as VAT registration and de-registration, VAT refunds, what is meant by “zero-rated”, “exempt supplies”, “partial exemptions” which according to Clowes are all things that VAT registrants should know about if they are to engage the GRA. Attendees were also educated on VAT return submissions and penalties. In referencing the topic of tax invoice versus sales invoice, which was also discussed, Clowes pointed out that there are some businesses which refuse to give persons VAT receipts, noting that if they issue a receipt then the person will have to pay VAT. This is an issue which he noted clarity was needed on. Facilitators in their address also warned against this practice as they stressed the importance of businesses registered for VAT to issue receipts.Clowes further stressed that businesses are expected to be tax compliant if they wish to obtain certain licenses from the GRA.In addressing business professionals who were present, Assistant Commissioner of VAT Audit and Enforcement Lavina Waldrond pointed to several issues as she urged that they be more compliant. In this regard, she stressed the timely payment of taxes, citing penalties.Waldrond also highlighted that tax returns have been sent back to the GRA due to persons failing to sign to receive same. To this end, she said the GRA is working to improve its services by putting more suitable measures in placeMembers of the business community were also given an opportunity to share concerns and make recommendations.last_img read more

A Drag on Your Success

first_imgYour success depends upon you deciding to be successful, and then having the discipline and focus to do it. It also depends on your guarding against the very things that will obstruct you. You must decide that you will not allow the following be a drag on your success:Poor Mindset: Every result you create starts in your mind first. Your beliefs about something become your truth, whether or not they are true for others. A pessimistic, cynical attitude is a debilitating and disempowering attitude, and one that will prevent you from doing the work you are capable of—and producing the results you want. A positive, optimistic, future-oriented mindset is empowering and produces velocity.Poor Energy: Every result you want to achieve requires time and energy. A lack of energy is a drag on results, as it reduces your capacity to work. Everyone starts the week with 168 hours, but those with the energy produce out sized results. Without the energy, very little gets done. Your energy is a critical variable. It levels the playing field against those with great resources, including those who may be smarter and those who have greater resources. The energy to out-hustle the field produces a competitive advantage and speed to results.Lack of Purpose: Without knowing what you want, and without a burning desire to manifest it in your life, your results will be slow coming. Drifting, with no goal in sight, makes it difficult to decide what to do and when to do it. It leaves you susceptible to distractions and complacency. When you know your purpose, all your actions are designed to help you be more, do more, have more, and contribute more. Purpose eliminates and streamlines.Distractions: Focus is the new currency of success and achievement. If your smart phone gets more attention than your real goals and ambition, you are prioritizing small things in place of much bigger, much more valuable things. This drag on your success is underestimated, as many have traded sitting in front of the television for staring at the tiny screen of infinite distractions. Success is never achieved before the price is paid, and that price is not being paid while you are scrolling. Success audits your actions and knows when you have put in the work.Excuses and Rationalizations: Maybe you weren’t born with a silver spoon in your mouth. Maybe you didn’t’ go to the right college, or maybe you didn’t go to college at all. Maybe your parents split when you were a kid, and maybe you misspent a good part of your youth and got in trouble. The story you tell yourself is either a set of excuses or the reason you are now going to do what you are here for. You chose that frame, and you can choose another one whenever you want to. Excuses and rationalizations will never improve your results or lead to success. Own your story, and then write the next chapter. You are either empowered or not, and that is your choice. If you are empowered then you control your ability to be successful. If you have that control, you can take care not to allow anything to tamper with the mindset you need to achieve the results you want. Essential Reading! Great Googie checking out the view of and from Seattles Space Needle

first_img Google Maps for Android Gander at the Googie goodness of Seattle’s Space Needle Related on CNET 0 Share your voice The view from the Tokyo Skytree, one of the tallest structures on Earth 148 floors in the sky: The view from the Burj Khalifa A tour of the Petronas Towers of Kuala Lumpur Cold War destroyer: Inside the USS Turner Joy Sleeper to Seattle: 39 hours on Amtrak’s Coast Starlight Culture That design, though. Like many once-modern designs, Googie became dated before it became retro, so precious few of these buildings still exist. Los Angeles still has a bunch, an important part of the city’s relatively short architectural history. The New York’s World’s Fair from two years later had most of its buildings removed, and some still exist. Of those still in Queens several are rotting away. The Tomorrowlands at the American Disney parks still have some Googie-inspired buildings, but the newer parks generally don’t. Here in Seattle, the Needle is in a sort of Googie oasis. The towering glass-and-steel skyscrapers are farther south, at a respectable distance, allowing the Space Needle to still have incredible views and not seem tiny compared to modern engineering. I buy my ticket and head up. Clouds on the horizon mean we’ll miss the moment of sunset, but the view is fantastic regardless. There’s not much to explore on the observation deck, it’s not that big. The original idea was for a floating restaurant, and in terms of size that’s basically what this feels like, a big restaurant. Outside there are high glass walls, with tilted glass benches that let you lean back if your vertigo allows. 40 Photos “Googie.” It’s not a misprint, it’s an architectural style. You might not know the name, but you’ll probably recognize it. A subset of Mid-century modern architecture, you’ve seen it in such movies as The Incredibles and TV shows like The Jetsons. Googie is rocket-inspired geometric designs featuring atoms, UFOs, boomerangs and anything with an intrinsic sense of motion. Perhaps the most recognizable example is the unofficial symbol of the city of Seattle: The Space Needle.Built for the Seattle World’s Fair in 1962, the 605-foot (184-meter) tower was built to withstand earthquakes greater than 9.0 and category-5 hurricane winds. It has been visited by over 63 million people, including me. Here’s a look inside, and the excellent views from the observation deck. Review • The rebuilt Google Maps for Android is better than ever Seattle stunner For some reason, I decided to walk. I’d just arrived via ferry after photographing the USS Turner Joy on the other side of Puget Sound. It didn’t seem that far on Google Maps, but of course, Google Maps doesn’t (yet) tell you that there are hills. When I finally arrived at the tower its size dominated the views. Briefly the tallest building west of the Mississippi, it is far shorter than more modern towers, like the Tokyo Skytree. Post a comment If you head down the wood- and glass-lined “Oculus” staircase, you get to the lower level. Here, in addition to the restaurant, is a heavily reinforced glass floor that will also rotate. I leave as the tower closes for the night. The next day I head back, taking the monorail that was also built for the World’s Fair. It, too, is an anachronism of another age. The cars are original, but are in good shape. The daytime view is perhaps not quite as epic as the night, but still impressive. Three Tiny Planets from the observation deck of the Space Needle. From my Instagram. Geoffrey Morrison/CNET I check my map, and extrapolate from a few Instagram photos, where on the nearby hill I’d have to head to get a good view of the Needle and the city behind. Kerry Park seems easiest, and closest to a bus line. No way I’m walking up there. The view doesn’t disappoint. I return a few hours later, after dinner with a high school friend I haven’t seen in 20 years. This trip was a pretty good idea. The Space Needle lit at night is simply gorgeous. Spacebound space-needle-28-of-40 Geoffrey Morrison/CNET As one of the most visited attractions on the West Coast, you don’t need me to tell you it’s a great spot. You can buy your tickets ahead of time, which is a bit of a gamble. Seattle is notorious for its cloud cover and regular drizzle, but on the other hand in the summer I can imagine the best times sell out. I’ll leave that decision up to you. If you can, arrive about an hour before sunset, then stay to see the lights of the city at night. The Space Needle’s height may no longer be impressive, but the whole point of a tower like this is for a good view, and you can still get that, not to mention the great view looking at it on the ground. ACC launches investigation against 8 BNP leaders

first_img(Top) Nazrul Islam Khan, Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Abdul Awal Mintoo and Morshed Khan. (Bottom) Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, Mirza Abbas, Habibun-nabi Khan Sohel and Tabith Awal The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has now launched investigation into allegations of money laundering, amassing illegal wealth and suspicious bank transactions against eight BNP leaders. The anti-corruption watchdog has launched the investigation barely two months after a court sent the chief of country’s main opposition political party, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), and former prime minister Khaleda Zia to jail in a graft case filed by the ACC.Another case filed by ACC is pending against her. Besides, some 25 BNP leaders are facing graft cases filed by ACC. The BNP leaders against whom the ACC launched the investigation are: standing committee members Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Nazrul Islam Khan, Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury and Mirza Abbas, two vice chairmen Abdul Awal Mintoo and M Morshed Khan, joint secretary general and BNP’s Dhaka city’s south unit president Habibun-nabi Khan Sohel and Mintoo’s son and executive committee member Tabith Awal.ACC has also initiated investigation against Morshed Khan’s son Faisal Morshed Khan.ACC officials said the body entrusted one of its deputy directors, Shamsul Alam, with the investigation against the BNP.They said the ACC would send letters to banks concerned by this week, seeking information about the respective persons and would also ask the BNP leaders to submit their wealth statements.ACC officials said the organisation has launched the investigation after some media outlets, quoting intelligence sources, published news reports that “suspicious transactions” of as much as Tk 1.25 billon was made in 30 days’ time in the bank accounts of these BNP leaders. They said most of those whose bank account records show “unusual money withdrawal” are businessmen and the volume of transactions is not unusual either, but the withdrawal was made in cash which, ACC officials said, has created suspicions. The ACC would check if the money was spent other than on business purposes.ACC officials said allegations have it that Abdul Awal Mintoo withdrew some Tk 320 million on 11, 15 and 22 February and his son Tabith Awal withdrew some Tk 200 million in the same month.Morshed Khan withdrew Tk 180 million on 27 February while his son Faisal withdrew Tk 90 million on 26 February. It is alleged that some Tk 210 million was withdrawn from the bank account of Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain from 3 to 12 March and some of the money was withdrawn from outside Dhaka.  ACC is also claiming that some Tk 160 million was withdrawn from the account of Mirza Abbas on 28 February and 4 March. It is also being alleged that Tk 70 million was withdrawn from the bank accounts of Nazrul Islam Khan and Habibun-nabi Khan Sohel at different times.BNP has all along been accusing the Anti-Corruption Commission of serving the interests of the ruling quarters. At a press conference on 21 March, BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi alleged that ACC is like a one-eyed animal.    BNP standing committee member Khandakar Mosharraf Hossain said, “The ACC has launched this investigation based on the reports published in some baseless online portals. How authentic are those reports? Neither me nor my family members have any account with that bank.”Terming the move purely political, he lamented that the ACC has chosen to turn a blind eye to people who have misappropriated millions, especially when the ministries and the Bangladesh Bank have proofs.Senior leader Nazrul Islam Khan said, “This is just another blueprint of the government to keep the active BNP leaders under pressure. The country knows why the ACC is after us when people who have institutionalised corruption are at large.””Such news was published on online portal Bangla Insider on 17 March. Everyone knows who are behind it. The ACC will now carry out an investigation based on that report. The involvement of constitutional bodies in such politicised acts is tarnishing their image, and that of the country as well,” said BNP vice chairman Abdul Awal Mintoo. No ACC official was available for a comment to this end. ACC spokesperson and secretary Shamsul Arefin’s phone did not receive a call despite repeated attempts. He did not reply to a text either.Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) executive director Iftekharuzzaman said, “We hope the ACC will carry out their duties within their legal framework. If they prioritise political identity it will be a blow to their accountability.”last_img read more
