Inter Milan coach Luciano Spalletti responded to questions from journalists at the Suning Training Centre in preparation for the match against PSV on Tuesday. He says via official club website that Vecino may not feature in the match but Nainggolan should train more to avoid risking a repeat of his injury coming back.“Vecino? He probably won’t be available for the match while Nainggolan needs to work for a few more days to not be at risk of his injury repeating itself.”Capello calls Lukaku “a modern striker” Manuel R. Medina – September 14, 2019 The former Italian manager believes Romelu Lukaku is perfectly suited for Antonio Conte’s Internazionale Milan in the Serie A.Spalletti also spoke about other players:“Perisic’s form? It’s natural that people look out for his assists and goals but strength, speed, distance covered and physicality are also important in games. He’s a key player for us.”“ Icardi’s trip to Madrid to watch River Plate vs. Boca Juniors? I don’t see any issue with it, lots of other players from different teams were there too, it certainly wasn’t strange for him to be there.”
Updated: 9:29 AM SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez, D-San Diego, will join with local workers Thursday to call for the passage of a bill she authored that would limit when businesses and companies could classify employees as independent contractors.Assembly Bill 5 would codify worker protections established in last year’s state Supreme Court decision in the case of Dynamex Operations West Inc. v. Superior Court of Los Angeles. If passed, the bill would reclassify thousands of California workers like Uber drivers and exotic dancers as employees rather than independent contractors. There are some oppositions from some rideshare drivers who fear the passage of the bill would take away their ability to work when they want to.Opponents said the bill doesn’t accurately reflect today’s realities. They are concerned it would move the state backward by eliminating their choice to work independently. They also argue that many people drive for Uber and Lyft to earn extra money to supplement their day job. If the drivers become full-time employees, they will no longer be able to continue driving part-time. This will leave a considerable gap in the transportation that millions of consumers rely on every day.The two giant ride-sharing companies, Uber and Lyft, are by far the most vocal opponents of the bill. The Assembly passed AB 5 in May and it currently sits in the state Senate as companies attempt to carve out exemptions for specific industries like ride-booking and food delivery services. The bill has also drawn national attention due to support from Democratic presidential candidates and Sens. Elizabeth Warren, D-Massachusetts, Bernie Sanders, I-Vermont, and Kamala Harris, D-California.Janitorial workers and representatives of Rideshare Drivers United in Southern California, the United Taxi Workers Alliance, the Employee Rights Center and the Sierra Club are expected to join Gonzalez at the rally and news conference to call for AB 5’s passage. The rally is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. at Waterfront Park. Dan Cohen AUTHOR Patrick O’Brien, director of DOD’s Office of Economic Adjustment (OEA), will discuss defense communities’ leading concerns at Installation Innovation Forum (IIF) 2016, scheduled for Feb. 29-March 2 in Charleston, S.C., including the uncertainty surrounding future defense spending and the prospect of further downsizing at installations around the country. As the Pentagon enters the fourth year of fiscal constraints imposed under the 2011 Budget Control Act, the Army remains on a path to shrink its active-duty end strength to 450,000 soldiers by the end of fiscal 2018 — down from a force of 570,000 as recently as FY 2013 — leaving many communities anxious about the future. At the same time, the level of excess capacity is rising throughout DOD, particularly at Army and Air Force installations. The strict spending caps also have forced the services to limit spending on facilities sustainment, undercutting installations’ military value.During an “Innovation Dialogue” at IIF 2016, O’Brien will help defense communities understand how the recently released FY 2017 budget request could affect them, and provide insight into the impact of future budget trends. He also will discuss OEA’s ongoing response to changes in defense spending and talk about the agency’s newest initiatives to support communities. O’Brien will highlight the best ways communities can prepare for possible downsizing and other potential defense actions. The session, which will be moderated by ADC CEO Tim Ford, will be held Wednesday morning on March 2. More details about the conference program and location are available on the conference website.

A 23rd-century tourist guide to the galaxy The top layers of the archive disc can be viewed with an optical microscope. Arch Mission Foundation/Bruce Ha On Thursday night, a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket carried an Israeli-made spacecraft named Beresheet beyond the grasp of Earth’s gravity and sent it on its way to the surface of the moon. On board Beresheet is a specially designed disc encoded with a 30-million-page archive of human civilization built to last billions of years into the future. The backup for humanity has been dubbed “The Lunar Library” by its creator, the Arch Mission Foundation (AMF). “The idea is to place enough backups in enough places around the solar system, on an ongoing basis, that our precious knowledge and biological heritage can never be lost,” the nonprofit’s co-founder Nova Spivack told me via email. The AMF also placed a small test archive on Elon Musk’s red Tesla Roadster that was launched in the direction of Mars aboard the first Falcon Heavy demonstration mission last year. That archive consisted of Isaac Asimov’s Foundation Trilogy encoded in a disc made of quartz silica glass made to last millions of years as the Roadster orbits the sun. The AMF has also placed a solid-state copy of Wikipedia on board a cubesat from SpaceChain in low-Earth orbit. The little lander Beresheet hopes to make history in multiple ways this year. SpaceIL Part of the motivation for the far-out project is to leave a copy of humanity’s knowledge not just in the cloud, but far beyond the clouds, should the impacts of climate change or a potential nuclear war do us or the planet in at some point in the future. “While I am optimistic that humanity will rise to the challenge and develop a multinational planetary defense initiative to mitigate these planetary risks, it is also prudent to have a plan B,” Spivack said. “Instead of one backup in one place our strategy is ‘many copies, many places’ — and we plan to send updates on a regular basis.”The AMF has already signed on to an additional planned moon mission, with startup Astrobotic, to send another Lunar Library installment to the moon in the next few years. There are also plans in the works to send archives to Mars, LaGrange points around Earth and deep underground caves on our planet. “The interplanetary network of backup locations we have started may even help to enable an interplanetary Internet. As we become a spacefaring civilization, we are going to need ways to move big data around the solar system, and protect it in transit, and at each location,” Spivack said. 17 Photos Tags Share your voice Sci-Tech 8 Space Comments The disc aboard Beresheet is about the size and thickness of a DVD, but consists of 25 stacked thin nickel films that AMF insists can resist radiation, extreme temperatures and other harsh conditions found in space for billions of years. There is, of course, no way to test how long it will last, but if it survives as long as hoped, the disc may even be around longer than the moon itself. The top four layers are actually filled with 60,000 pages of tiny analog images that can be viewed with optical microscope technology that’s been around for centuries. The images include a sort of users’ guide explaining human language, the contents of the disc and how to access the deeper layers containing compressed digital data. The digitized layers include a full copy of Wikipedia, more than 25,000 books and data for understanding over 5,000 languages. But if humans — or perhaps someone else — is ever going to get a chance to use the Lunar Library, it has to first get to the surface of the moon. Beresheet is now just beginning a long, complicated journey that will involve a handful of swings around Earth to increase the size of its orbit before jumping into orbit around the moon and eventually attempting a landing. The first window of opportunity to land comes on April 11. So if all works out, Wikipedia will touch down on the moon almost exactly 50 years after man first showed up there. Any aliens who come across it in the future will surely be baffled by a few choice entries, like “moon-landing conspiracy theories,” “flat Earth” or “Tide pod challenge.” But at least they’ll help illustrate why we needed a backup.
Google Maps for Android Gander at the Googie goodness of Seattle’s Space Needle Related on CNET 0 Share your voice The view from the Tokyo Skytree, one of the tallest structures on Earth 148 floors in the sky: The view from the Burj Khalifa A tour of the Petronas Towers of Kuala Lumpur Cold War destroyer: Inside the USS Turner Joy Sleeper to Seattle: 39 hours on Amtrak’s Coast Starlight Culture That design, though. Like many once-modern designs, Googie became dated before it became retro, so precious few of these buildings still exist. Los Angeles still has a bunch, an important part of the city’s relatively short architectural history. The New York’s World’s Fair from two years later had most of its buildings removed, and some still exist. Of those still in Queens several are rotting away. The Tomorrowlands at the American Disney parks still have some Googie-inspired buildings, but the newer parks generally don’t. Here in Seattle, the Needle is in a sort of Googie oasis. The towering glass-and-steel skyscrapers are farther south, at a respectable distance, allowing the Space Needle to still have incredible views and not seem tiny compared to modern engineering. I buy my ticket and head up. Clouds on the horizon mean we’ll miss the moment of sunset, but the view is fantastic regardless. There’s not much to explore on the observation deck, it’s not that big. The original idea was for a floating restaurant, and in terms of size that’s basically what this feels like, a big restaurant. Outside there are high glass walls, with tilted glass benches that let you lean back if your vertigo allows. 40 Photos “Googie.” It’s not a misprint, it’s an architectural style. You might not know the name, but you’ll probably recognize it. A subset of Mid-century modern architecture, you’ve seen it in such movies as The Incredibles and TV shows like The Jetsons. Googie is rocket-inspired geometric designs featuring atoms, UFOs, boomerangs and anything with an intrinsic sense of motion. Perhaps the most recognizable example is the unofficial symbol of the city of Seattle: The Space Needle.Built for the Seattle World’s Fair in 1962, the 605-foot (184-meter) tower was built to withstand earthquakes greater than 9.0 and category-5 hurricane winds. It has been visited by over 63 million people, including me. Here’s a look inside, and the excellent views from the observation deck. Review • The rebuilt Google Maps for Android is better than ever Seattle stunner For some reason, I decided to walk. I’d just arrived via ferry after photographing the USS Turner Joy on the other side of Puget Sound. It didn’t seem that far on Google Maps, but of course, Google Maps doesn’t (yet) tell you that there are hills. When I finally arrived at the tower its size dominated the views. Briefly the tallest building west of the Mississippi, it is far shorter than more modern towers, like the Tokyo Skytree. Post a comment If you head down the wood- and glass-lined “Oculus” staircase, you get to the lower level. Here, in addition to the restaurant, is a heavily reinforced glass floor that will also rotate. I leave as the tower closes for the night. The next day I head back, taking the monorail that was also built for the World’s Fair. It, too, is an anachronism of another age. The cars are original, but are in good shape. The daytime view is perhaps not quite as epic as the night, but still impressive. Three Tiny Planets from the observation deck of the Space Needle. From my Instagram. Geoffrey Morrison/CNET I check my map, and extrapolate from a few Instagram photos, where on the nearby hill I’d have to head to get a good view of the Needle and the city behind. Kerry Park seems easiest, and closest to a bus line. No way I’m walking up there. The view doesn’t disappoint. I return a few hours later, after dinner with a high school friend I haven’t seen in 20 years. This trip was a pretty good idea. The Space Needle lit at night is simply gorgeous. Spacebound Geoffrey Morrison/CNET As one of the most visited attractions on the West Coast, you don’t need me to tell you it’s a great spot. You can buy your tickets ahead of time, which is a bit of a gamble. Seattle is notorious for its cloud cover and regular drizzle, but on the other hand in the summer I can imagine the best times sell out. I’ll leave that decision up to you. If you can, arrive about an hour before sunset, then stay to see the lights of the city at night. The Space Needle’s height may no longer be impressive, but the whole point of a tower like this is for a good view, and you can still get that, not to mention the great view looking at it on the ground. Share your voice Culture Gaming 0 Post a comment Many gamers these days like to play online with friends. Discord helps them do that. Getty Images You may never have heard of Discord, but you might soon. The chat app built initially for gamers has been steadily expanding outside that world as it’s increasingly used by YouTube personalities, podcasters, hackers and more. Overall, the company says it counts more than 250 million registered users, or basically the same number of people who’ve signed up to play the cultural phenom Fortnight. More than 56 million people log in each month on the app, which marks its fourth anniversary Monday. “As Discord has grown, it’s gone mainstream,” the company said in a statement. Discord is praised for its sleek design, similar to business chat software Slack. Discord While it’s true the 165-person company has become popular outside of gaming, its most popular “servers” (or, chat rooms) are typically gaming related. The top server is for Fortnite, followed by a similar battle game Spellbreak, then Fortnite competitor PUBG. Microsoft’s world building game Minecraft, Supercell’s strategy game Clash Royale and Ubisoft’s Rainbow 6 military survival game are also popular. Its good-natured gaming roots and slick design have made it popular among gamers looking to easily chat with friends or organize a gaming session from across town or on another side of the world. It’s often called “Slack for gamers,” a reference to the similarly designed business software that’s expected to hold an initial public offering this year. But Discord has a darker side. White supremacists and hackers have gravitated to the platform, in part because of its ease of use and insufficient bureaucracy to track and punish them. That’s different from companies like Facebook and Twitter, which have employee bases many times larger than Discord’s and have taken a harder line, even using computer programs to identify and then excise bad actors from their communities. Still, San Francisco-based Discord is pushing forward. It’s launched a game sales service to compete with the likes of Fortnite maker Epic and Valve’s popular “Steam” store. The company declined to say how many games it’s sold through that effort. Tags
Tesla Electric Cars Car Industry Enlarge ImageThe Model S looks an awful lot now like it did when it debuted in 2012, but that’s not a bad thing. Tim Stevens/Roadshow Most manufacturers would be freaking out about the future if it had models in its lineup that were mostly the same now as they were when they debuted seven years ago. Not Tesla, though. Despite many minor changes and a few technical updates, the Model S of 2019 is not wildly different from the one that debuted way back in 2012. That has led people to wonder if the Model S and its slightly newer sibling, Model X, will be getting a redo anytime soon. The answer to that, according to the Big T’s CEO Elon Musk, is no. The recent mechanical refresh to S and X that we saw a few months ago is the extent of what we can expect for the future. On the one hand, that sounds crazy, but on the other, it’s not like either model looks especially dated. Now playing: Watch this: There is no “refreshed” Model X or Model S coming, only a series of minor ongoing changes. Most significant change in past few years was to use high efficiency Model 3 rear drive unit as S/X front drive unit. That went into production 3 months ago.— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) July 9, 2019 2 Musk’s decision makes sense from a business standpoint, too. Why would a company that is so resource-hungry as it is divert funding and personnel away from new models like Y or the Tesla truck to retool relatively low-volume flagship models? Now, Models S and X will continue to get minor updates, both in hardware and of course through software, but Musk also states that we shouldn’t expect even an interior re-do, despite the move away from the S and X’s more traditional interior layout to the more minimal style used on 3 and Y.In the long-term, it’s not clear how S and X fit into Tesla’s grand plans with all the robotaxis and semi-trucks and God knows what else Elon is cooking up. In the meantime though, they won’t be going anywhere, and if our own Tim Stevens’ recent review of the current Model S is anything to go by, that’s not a bad thing.Tesla didn’t had no further comment beyond Musk’s tweets. Atlas Jewellery, which has been in the headlines recently following the arrest of its founder M M Ramachandran for defaulting on repayment of loans worth over Rs 900 crore, is scheduled to hold an annual general meeting on 28 September. The AGM will see a ‘special notice’ to expel members Lukoo Sugunan Madathiparambil and Ajith Kovooril Muraleedharan from the board of directors. The move comes after Madathiparambil and Muraleedharan alleged that their appointment to the board happened “without their knowledge”. Both of them said that “they were just small-time employees”.Madathiparambil was just a Class X pass out carrying out small-time administrative work at Atlas Jewellery while Muraleedharan’s educational qualification was just Plus-II, Indian Express reported. The company had claimed that Muraleedharan possessed a graduate degree in IT with over six years of experience.Atlas Jewellery has decided to replace the duo with Supratik Chatterjee and Sunil Pant. While Chatterjee has more than 36 years of experience in banking and held various positions at top public sector banks in India, Pant has over 37 years of experience in banking sector. In the recent post he held, Pant worked as the chief general manager of SBI at its corporate office in Mumbai. The company took back its decision to re-appoint Shrirang Vasant Khadilkar as a non-executive independent director following his recent resignation from the board.Surprisingly, the AGM notice to shareholders did not mention anything about the arrest of Ramachandran and the debt he owes to banks.

(Top) Nazrul Islam Khan, Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Abdul Awal Mintoo and Morshed Khan. (Bottom) Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, Mirza Abbas, Habibun-nabi Khan Sohel and Tabith Awal The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has now launched investigation into allegations of money laundering, amassing illegal wealth and suspicious bank transactions against eight BNP leaders. The anti-corruption watchdog has launched the investigation barely two months after a court sent the chief of country’s main opposition political party, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), and former prime minister Khaleda Zia to jail in a graft case filed by the ACC.Another case filed by ACC is pending against her. Besides, some 25 BNP leaders are facing graft cases filed by ACC. The BNP leaders against whom the ACC launched the investigation are: standing committee members Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Nazrul Islam Khan, Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury and Mirza Abbas, two vice chairmen Abdul Awal Mintoo and M Morshed Khan, joint secretary general and BNP’s Dhaka city’s south unit president Habibun-nabi Khan Sohel and Mintoo’s son and executive committee member Tabith Awal.ACC has also initiated investigation against Morshed Khan’s son Faisal Morshed Khan.ACC officials said the body entrusted one of its deputy directors, Shamsul Alam, with the investigation against the BNP.They said the ACC would send letters to banks concerned by this week, seeking information about the respective persons and would also ask the BNP leaders to submit their wealth statements.ACC officials said the organisation has launched the investigation after some media outlets, quoting intelligence sources, published news reports that “suspicious transactions” of as much as Tk 1.25 billon was made in 30 days’ time in the bank accounts of these BNP leaders. They said most of those whose bank account records show “unusual money withdrawal” are businessmen and the volume of transactions is not unusual either, but the withdrawal was made in cash which, ACC officials said, has created suspicions. The ACC would check if the money was spent other than on business purposes.ACC officials said allegations have it that Abdul Awal Mintoo withdrew some Tk 320 million on 11, 15 and 22 February and his son Tabith Awal withdrew some Tk 200 million in the same month.Morshed Khan withdrew Tk 180 million on 27 February while his son Faisal withdrew Tk 90 million on 26 February. It is alleged that some Tk 210 million was withdrawn from the bank account of Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain from 3 to 12 March and some of the money was withdrawn from outside Dhaka. ACC is also claiming that some Tk 160 million was withdrawn from the account of Mirza Abbas on 28 February and 4 March. It is also being alleged that Tk 70 million was withdrawn from the bank accounts of Nazrul Islam Khan and Habibun-nabi Khan Sohel at different times.BNP has all along been accusing the Anti-Corruption Commission of serving the interests of the ruling quarters. At a press conference on 21 March, BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi alleged that ACC is like a one-eyed animal. BNP standing committee member Khandakar Mosharraf Hossain said, “The ACC has launched this investigation based on the reports published in some baseless online portals. How authentic are those reports? Neither me nor my family members have any account with that bank.”Terming the move purely political, he lamented that the ACC has chosen to turn a blind eye to people who have misappropriated millions, especially when the ministries and the Bangladesh Bank have proofs.Senior leader Nazrul Islam Khan said, “This is just another blueprint of the government to keep the active BNP leaders under pressure. The country knows why the ACC is after us when people who have institutionalised corruption are at large.””Such news was published on online portal Bangla Insider on 17 March. Everyone knows who are behind it. The ACC will now carry out an investigation based on that report. The involvement of constitutional bodies in such politicised acts is tarnishing their image, and that of the country as well,” said BNP vice chairman Abdul Awal Mintoo. No ACC official was available for a comment to this end. ACC spokesperson and secretary Shamsul Arefin’s phone did not receive a call despite repeated attempts. He did not reply to a text either.Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) executive director Iftekharuzzaman said, “We hope the ACC will carry out their duties within their legal framework. If they prioritise political identity it will be a blow to their accountability.”

Aysha Siddiqa MinniAysha Siddiqa Minni, wife of slain Barguna youth Rifat Sharif, confessed to her involvement in Rifat murder, claimed superintendent of Barguna police Maruf Hossain on Thursday. The police official came up with the statement at a press conference organised after they arrested Rashidul Hasan Rishan, 20, another accused in the much talked-about murder case.”Minni, herself, admitted her involvement in Rifat murder. She kept close contact with Rifat’s murderers. She even held several meetings with the murderers before and after the murder,” the SP told the press conference.Earlier on 17 July, Minni was arrested after nearly 12 hours of interrogation. In a statement, superintendent of police in Barugna, Maruf Hossain, said the investigation officer’s interrogation of Aysha Siddiqa Minni and analysis of the information she provided him appeared to show her involvement in the murder. On 14 July, Minni addressed a media conference at her father’s residence, where she claimed herself innocent. She defended herself saying those who created ‘Nayan Bond’ and the terrorist group ‘Bond 007’ in Barguna are trying to divert the murder case to a different direction by accusing her.Superintendent of Barguna police Maruf Hossain presents accused Rashidul Hasan Rishan, 20, in Rifat murder at his Barguna office on Thursday. Their main intention is to direct the case to a different course. Because, those who created 007 Bond group are very influential and rich,” she told the press conference. She made the claim after her father-in-law Abdul Halim Sharif, on the earlier day, told a media conference at Barguna press club that Minni was involved in the Rifat killing. He also demanded her arrest. On 26 June, Rifat Sharif was killed in broad daylight in front of Barguna Government College. On the following day, victim’s father Abdul Halim Sharif filed a lawsuit with Barguna police station against 12. Besides, four-five others unnamed people also were made accused in the case.Main accused in the case Sabbir Ahmed alias Nayan Bond was killed in what police called a gunfight with them on 2 July.As of Thursday morning, 15 people have been arrested in connection with the murder.
Patrick Semansky | AP via NPRTechnicians set up the stage for the Sept. 26 debate between Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump at Hofstra University in Hempstead, N.Y.By Tania Lombrozo*The first of three debates between Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump will take place tonight.Houston Public Media’s Coverage of Election 2016The debates, sponsored by the Commission on Presidential Debates, have the stated mission of offering “the best possible information to viewers and listeners” in the lead-up to the general election. There’s just one problem.Decades of research suggests that voting decisions are influenced by quite a few factors beyond the “best possible information.” For instance, people’s perceptions of politicians can be influenced by their height: Taller men are, on average, perceived to be more competent. Using data from past U.S. presidential elections, one analysis found that candidates who were taller than their opponents received more popular votes and were more likely to be re-elected. (They were not, however, more likely to win initial elections.)Sensitive to the influence of height, some debates have allowed a sort of prosthetic: In the 1976 debate between Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter, lectern heights were selected such that neither candidate would appear taller than his opponent. For this year’s debates, the commission has apparently allowed for a custom-made podium that will accommodate the candidates’ difference in stature. As viewers or listeners, most of us won’t have a say in podium heights — let alone the structure of the debates or the questions posed to candidates. We can, however, take other measures to help ourselves overcome some of the biases that could distort our perceptions of the candidates and the debates. Consider these cognitive correctives — five tips from the psychological sciences for watching a debate without (quite as much) bias:1. On Election Day, our opinion of how each candidate performed in the debates won’t be shaped directly by what they said or did, but by our memories and impressions of what they said or did. And memory is a funny thing. We tend to remember what came first and last better than the bits in the middle, and our overall impression is especially influenced by an event’s peak (the point of maximum intensity or salience) and its end. Subsequent media coverage is likely to exaggerate these existing tendencies by focusing on a small number of “peak” points. But a lot of the less salient middle will undoubtedly contain important information about each candidate’s adequacy for the job.Tip No. 1 is not to reduce the debate to its sound bites, neither those the media provide us with nor the ones our own memories tend to produce.2. Political issues can be pretty complex, yet we often think we understand them better than we do. Trying to explain them, it turns out, can be a valuable corrective, helping us appreciate that we don’t know what we thought we did. For instance, many people have opinions about issues like cap-and-trade systems for carbon emissions, but don’t actually understand what they are or what their implications would be.When it comes to evaluating each candidate’s policies, solid understanding is an important prerequisite to clear judgment.Tip No. 2 is to help yourself overcome illusions of political understanding by explaining a given issue or policy to someone else — or even to yourself. The next step is to become better informed, so you know what your vote will really be supporting.3. Stereotypes about men and women can inadvertently affect the way we perceive individuals. For instance, several studies have found that women are judged differently than men for exhibiting the same behaviors. What is taken as a sign of competence and leadership for a man might be judged overly aggressive or blunt for a woman. At the same time, conforming to more nurturing female stereotypes can make a woman better liked, but deemed less fit for a position of authority. Biases about men and woman can be subtle. They can manifest even in those who hold explicitly egalitarian views, and women can exhibit them to the same degree as men.Unfortunately, gender bias isn’t like height: There’s no simple corrective to counteract gender bias in our evaluations of political candidates. However, there’s reason to believe such biases play a greater role when we consider general impressions in an unstructured way. If we judge Clinton and Trump by the first debate examples that come to mind, for example, there’s plenty of room for nonconscious processes to influence what we come up with. If we instead engage in more structured recall — by, for instance, comparing what was good and bad about each candidate’s performance, or by comparing what each proposed with regard to a particular issue and evaluating the proposals along predefined dimensions — we can potentially help mitigate the influence of gender-based biases.Tip No. 3 is to recognize your gender bias. This isn’t always easy to do, but evaluating the candidates in more structured and concrete ways is a strategy worth trying out.4. There’s lots of evidence that all else being equal, we judge confident people more competent and reliable. For instance, we’re more likely to believe the testimony of a confident eyewitness, even though the correlation between confidence and accuracy can be low. Research in domains including medicine, geopolitics and finance has also found that expert confidence can be a very poor guide to accuracy. Both presidential candidates are likely to appear confident in the debates. But both their absolute and relative levels of confidence shouldn’t be treated as good evidence for the quality of their arguments or the viability of their policies.Tip No. 4 is to go with content over confidence.5. The final tip comes from a large body of research on a phenomenon called confirmation bias. In many contexts, we selectively expose ourselves to observations that will support what we believe. If liberals follow only liberal debate commentary and conservatives follow only conservative debate commentary, no one is likely to end up with a full understanding of what transpired. Beyond selective exposure is a phenomenon known as biased assimilation: A Democrat and a Republican exposed to the same evidence might respond in very different ways. For instance, people tend to be less critical of arguments that support conclusions they endorse, and they correspondingly subject arguments that yield opposing conclusions to greater scrutiny.Tip No. 5 is to be nonpartisan in your debate-related media consumption and to be extra critical of the arguments supporting positions you favor. Doing so will help ensure that you’re evaluating the candidates on their merits — and not simply reinforcing what you already believe.*Tania Lombrozo is a psychology professor at the University of California, Berkeley. Artist’s rendering of proposed shelter in Southeast D.C. (Courtesy Image)District residents expressed anger, concern, approval, excitement, frustration and acceptance in response to the city’s announcement of the proposed locations for homeless shelters throughout the city. The shelter locations are projected to replace D.C. General in Ward 7, which is set to close in 2018.Mayor Muriel Bowser, city council members, Advisory Neighborhood Commission members, and other city officials met with residents last week in several community meetings to discuss and hear residents’ thoughts on a plan to place a city-owned housing facility in all eight wards.“I have been living here 38 years,” said Willie White, who lives near the proposed shelter on Delaware Avenue in Ward 6. “They did not even have the courtesy to come by and let me know what they were doing.” White’s reasoning was a general consensus expressed throughout the city.“I feel so uninvolved in such an important aspect that it gives me little faith moving forward,” said a resident from Ward 1, who said his uncle was homeless.During a Ward 2 meeting, the mayor told community members it wasn’t the city’s intention to keep the plan away from residents. “It is not possible to ask every single person whether they want a shelter at a particular site,” she said.Selecting a site before direct community engagement was the most effective way to develop a comprehensive plan for the project, she said. However the mayor also told residents in Ward 5 that she was amendable to accepting suggestions about the new locations.Community involvement isn’t the only issue residents have with the proposed shelters.Residents say the city has not done enough to make the facilities habitable, such as providing private bathrooms. Ward 4 resident Michelle Jones said she thought having private bathrooms was important for the safety of the shelter’s residents, especially among children who would otherwise be forced to use the bathrooms with older adults. “I don’t feel that the dormitory style is appropriate for children and families,” Taylor Massie, a resident of Ward 4, said in agreement. “I don’t think it inspires dignity.”Several residents expressed concern about the demand the shelters would place on their particular wards and the city, raising concerns about increased crime, decreased property values, and other issues.Deputy Mayor Courtney Snowden and Councilwoman Yvette Alexander spent most of their meeting in Ward 7 reassuring residents that the new homeless facility, in their ward, would not only provide a better place for families, but would also allow residents to breathe easier and to see more development in their community.Snowden told residents that there will be an abundance of programs and services within the facility to assist families, including education training and employment services, health care, financial and budget management counseling, and 24-hour staffing and security. “These facilities will be among the most dignified, innovative and effective in the country,” he said. “We’re going to work really hard to make sure that these businesses are hiring [D.C. residents] or are home-grown right here in Ward 7 and Ward 8.”However, not all residents voiced concern about the pending facilities. Some approved of the city’s initiative to find solutions to better house its homeless. “From what I’ve seen on the plan so far, I think it’s a win for the families, the city, and the administration,” said Akili West, a small business owner in Ward 4.Proposed homeless shelters, include:* Ward 1: 2105-2107 10th St. NW (29 units)* Ward 2: 810 5th St. NW (213-bed women-only shelter)* Ward 3: 2619 Wisconsin Ave. NW (38 units)* Ward 4: 5505 5th St. NW (49 units)* Ward 5: 2266 25th Place NE (50 units)* Ward 6: 700 Delaware Ave. SW (50 units)* Ward 7: 5004 D St. SE (35 units)* Ward 8: 6th & Chesapeake Streets. SE (50 units)
[dropcap]P[/dropcap]leasing result on Boxing Day with Cue Card’s last gasp success in the King George at a rewarding 9/2. Could well have been a fortunate winner with Don Cossack’s unfortunate fall but it’s impossible to tell for sure. The DRAW recommendation wasn’t so clever at the Britannia – I’m still giving Man U FAR too much credit and they really do look a club in turmoil now and Van Haal’s days surely numbered?Less busy day on the football front but a good Championship match to look forward to at 4.30pm with Nottingham Forest taking on Leeds. It’s a fixture that has thrown up a fair number of goals over the years….. Leeds 3 Nottingham Forest 7 (SEVEN) in 2012 !!!!Both teams are stuck in a bit of mid-season mediocrity – although a win for either side will edge them closer to the play-off zone. Not sure a DRAW would be an acceptable result for either side so I expect a push for the the full three points. Both sides arrive with recent momentum. Nottingham Forest have won four and drawn two of their last seven Championship games.Leeds have won three of their last four games and drawn the other match.Forest are without left-back Daniel Pinillos who is out for the rest of the season with knee ligament damage. Chris Cohen is still not fit after his cruciate injury.Leeds have no new injury problems despite playing their third match in just ten days.Nottingham Forest v Leeds UnitedChampionship16:30 Sky Sports 1 / Sky Sports 1 HDHEAD TO HEAD RECORD(Maximum 10 matches)Mar 2015 CHAMPIONSHIP Leeds 0-0 Nottm ForestDec 2014 CHAMPIONSHIP Nottm Forest 1-1 LeedsApr 2014 CHAMPIONSHIP Leeds 0-2 Nottm ForestDec 2013 CHAMPIONSHIP Nottm Forest 2-1 LeedsDec 2012 CHAMPIONSHIP Nottm Forest 4-2 LeedsSep 2012 CHAMPIONSHIP Leeds 2-1 Nottm ForestMar 2012 CHAMPIONSHIP Leeds 3-7 Nottm ForestNov 2011 CHAMPIONSHIP Nottm Forest 0-4 LeedsApr 2011 CHAMPIONSHIP Leeds 4-1 Nottm ForestAug 2010 CHAMPIONSHIP Nottm Forest 1-1 LeedsA close call but I favour Forest getting a hard-fought result and am backing them at 11/10 with Star Sports.RECOMMENDED BETS (scale of 1-50 points)BACK FOREST for 12 points at around 11/10 with Star SportsRETURN SINCE START OF WORLD CUP: PROFIT 100.06 POINTSWhat’s your view?
