Inter Milan coach Luciano Spalletti responded to questions from journalists at the Suning Training Centre in preparation for the match against PSV on Tuesday. He says via official club website that Vecino may not feature in the match but Nainggolan should train more to avoid risking a repeat of his injury coming back.“Vecino? He probably won’t be available for the match while Nainggolan needs to work for a few more days to not be at risk of his injury repeating itself.”Capello calls Lukaku “a modern striker” Manuel R. Medina – September 14, 2019 The former Italian manager believes Romelu Lukaku is perfectly suited for Antonio Conte’s Internazionale Milan in the Serie A.Spalletti also spoke about other players:“Perisic’s form? It’s natural that people look out for his assists and goals but strength, speed, distance covered and physicality are also important in games. He’s a key player for us.”“ Icardi’s trip to Madrid to watch River Plate vs. Boca Juniors? I don’t see any issue with it, lots of other players from different teams were there too, it certainly wasn’t strange for him to be there.”
Updated: 9:29 AM SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez, D-San Diego, will join with local workers Thursday to call for the passage of a bill she authored that would limit when businesses and companies could classify employees as independent contractors.Assembly Bill 5 would codify worker protections established in last year’s state Supreme Court decision in the case of Dynamex Operations West Inc. v. Superior Court of Los Angeles. If passed, the bill would reclassify thousands of California workers like Uber drivers and exotic dancers as employees rather than independent contractors. There are some oppositions from some rideshare drivers who fear the passage of the bill would take away their ability to work when they want to.Opponents said the bill doesn’t accurately reflect today’s realities. They are concerned it would move the state backward by eliminating their choice to work independently. They also argue that many people drive for Uber and Lyft to earn extra money to supplement their day job. If the drivers become full-time employees, they will no longer be able to continue driving part-time. This will leave a considerable gap in the transportation that millions of consumers rely on every day.The two giant ride-sharing companies, Uber and Lyft, are by far the most vocal opponents of the bill. The Assembly passed AB 5 in May and it currently sits in the state Senate as companies attempt to carve out exemptions for specific industries like ride-booking and food delivery services. The bill has also drawn national attention due to support from Democratic presidential candidates and Sens. Elizabeth Warren, D-Massachusetts, Bernie Sanders, I-Vermont, and Kamala Harris, D-California.Janitorial workers and representatives of Rideshare Drivers United in Southern California, the United Taxi Workers Alliance, the Employee Rights Center and the Sierra Club are expected to join Gonzalez at the rally and news conference to call for AB 5’s passage. The rally is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. at Waterfront Park. Dan Cohen AUTHOR Patrick O’Brien, director of DOD’s Office of Economic Adjustment (OEA), will discuss defense communities’ leading concerns at Installation Innovation Forum (IIF) 2016, scheduled for Feb. 29-March 2 in Charleston, S.C., including the uncertainty surrounding future defense spending and the prospect of further downsizing at installations around the country. As the Pentagon enters the fourth year of fiscal constraints imposed under the 2011 Budget Control Act, the Army remains on a path to shrink its active-duty end strength to 450,000 soldiers by the end of fiscal 2018 — down from a force of 570,000 as recently as FY 2013 — leaving many communities anxious about the future. At the same time, the level of excess capacity is rising throughout DOD, particularly at Army and Air Force installations. The strict spending caps also have forced the services to limit spending on facilities sustainment, undercutting installations’ military value.During an “Innovation Dialogue” at IIF 2016, O’Brien will help defense communities understand how the recently released FY 2017 budget request could affect them, and provide insight into the impact of future budget trends. He also will discuss OEA’s ongoing response to changes in defense spending and talk about the agency’s newest initiatives to support communities. O’Brien will highlight the best ways communities can prepare for possible downsizing and other potential defense actions. The session, which will be moderated by ADC CEO Tim Ford, will be held Wednesday morning on March 2. More details about the conference program and location are available on the conference website.

A 23rd-century tourist guide to the galaxy The top layers of the archive disc can be viewed with an optical microscope. Arch Mission Foundation/Bruce Ha On Thursday night, a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket carried an Israeli-made spacecraft named Beresheet beyond the grasp of Earth’s gravity and sent it on its way to the surface of the moon. On board Beresheet is a specially designed disc encoded with a 30-million-page archive of human civilization built to last billions of years into the future. The backup for humanity has been dubbed “The Lunar Library” by its creator, the Arch Mission Foundation (AMF). “The idea is to place enough backups in enough places around the solar system, on an ongoing basis, that our precious knowledge and biological heritage can never be lost,” the nonprofit’s co-founder Nova Spivack told me via email. The AMF also placed a small test archive on Elon Musk’s red Tesla Roadster that was launched in the direction of Mars aboard the first Falcon Heavy demonstration mission last year. That archive consisted of Isaac Asimov’s Foundation Trilogy encoded in a disc made of quartz silica glass made to last millions of years as the Roadster orbits the sun. The AMF has also placed a solid-state copy of Wikipedia on board a cubesat from SpaceChain in low-Earth orbit. The little lander Beresheet hopes to make history in multiple ways this year. SpaceIL Part of the motivation for the far-out project is to leave a copy of humanity’s knowledge not just in the cloud, but far beyond the clouds, should the impacts of climate change or a potential nuclear war do us or the planet in at some point in the future. “While I am optimistic that humanity will rise to the challenge and develop a multinational planetary defense initiative to mitigate these planetary risks, it is also prudent to have a plan B,” Spivack said. “Instead of one backup in one place our strategy is ‘many copies, many places’ — and we plan to send updates on a regular basis.”The AMF has already signed on to an additional planned moon mission, with startup Astrobotic, to send another Lunar Library installment to the moon in the next few years. There are also plans in the works to send archives to Mars, LaGrange points around Earth and deep underground caves on our planet. “The interplanetary network of backup locations we have started may even help to enable an interplanetary Internet. As we become a spacefaring civilization, we are going to need ways to move big data around the solar system, and protect it in transit, and at each location,” Spivack said. 17 Photos Tags Share your voice Sci-Tech 8 Space Comments The disc aboard Beresheet is about the size and thickness of a DVD, but consists of 25 stacked thin nickel films that AMF insists can resist radiation, extreme temperatures and other harsh conditions found in space for billions of years. There is, of course, no way to test how long it will last, but if it survives as long as hoped, the disc may even be around longer than the moon itself. The top four layers are actually filled with 60,000 pages of tiny analog images that can be viewed with optical microscope technology that’s been around for centuries. The images include a sort of users’ guide explaining human language, the contents of the disc and how to access the deeper layers containing compressed digital data. The digitized layers include a full copy of Wikipedia, more than 25,000 books and data for understanding over 5,000 languages. But if humans — or perhaps someone else — is ever going to get a chance to use the Lunar Library, it has to first get to the surface of the moon. Beresheet is now just beginning a long, complicated journey that will involve a handful of swings around Earth to increase the size of its orbit before jumping into orbit around the moon and eventually attempting a landing. The first window of opportunity to land comes on April 11. So if all works out, Wikipedia will touch down on the moon almost exactly 50 years after man first showed up there. Any aliens who come across it in the future will surely be baffled by a few choice entries, like “moon-landing conspiracy theories,” “flat Earth” or “Tide pod challenge.” But at least they’ll help illustrate why we needed a backup.
Google Maps for Android Gander at the Googie goodness of Seattle’s Space Needle Related on CNET 0 Share your voice The view from the Tokyo Skytree, one of the tallest structures on Earth 148 floors in the sky: The view from the Burj Khalifa A tour of the Petronas Towers of Kuala Lumpur Cold War destroyer: Inside the USS Turner Joy Sleeper to Seattle: 39 hours on Amtrak’s Coast Starlight Culture That design, though. Like many once-modern designs, Googie became dated before it became retro, so precious few of these buildings still exist. Los Angeles still has a bunch, an important part of the city’s relatively short architectural history. The New York’s World’s Fair from two years later had most of its buildings removed, and some still exist. Of those still in Queens several are rotting away. The Tomorrowlands at the American Disney parks still have some Googie-inspired buildings, but the newer parks generally don’t. Here in Seattle, the Needle is in a sort of Googie oasis. The towering glass-and-steel skyscrapers are farther south, at a respectable distance, allowing the Space Needle to still have incredible views and not seem tiny compared to modern engineering. I buy my ticket and head up. Clouds on the horizon mean we’ll miss the moment of sunset, but the view is fantastic regardless. There’s not much to explore on the observation deck, it’s not that big. The original idea was for a floating restaurant, and in terms of size that’s basically what this feels like, a big restaurant. Outside there are high glass walls, with tilted glass benches that let you lean back if your vertigo allows. 40 Photos “Googie.” It’s not a misprint, it’s an architectural style. You might not know the name, but you’ll probably recognize it. A subset of Mid-century modern architecture, you’ve seen it in such movies as The Incredibles and TV shows like The Jetsons. Googie is rocket-inspired geometric designs featuring atoms, UFOs, boomerangs and anything with an intrinsic sense of motion. Perhaps the most recognizable example is the unofficial symbol of the city of Seattle: The Space Needle.Built for the Seattle World’s Fair in 1962, the 605-foot (184-meter) tower was built to withstand earthquakes greater than 9.0 and category-5 hurricane winds. It has been visited by over 63 million people, including me. Here’s a look inside, and the excellent views from the observation deck. Review • The rebuilt Google Maps for Android is better than ever Seattle stunner For some reason, I decided to walk. I’d just arrived via ferry after photographing the USS Turner Joy on the other side of Puget Sound. It didn’t seem that far on Google Maps, but of course, Google Maps doesn’t (yet) tell you that there are hills. When I finally arrived at the tower its size dominated the views. Briefly the tallest building west of the Mississippi, it is far shorter than more modern towers, like the Tokyo Skytree. Post a comment If you head down the wood- and glass-lined “Oculus” staircase, you get to the lower level. Here, in addition to the restaurant, is a heavily reinforced glass floor that will also rotate. I leave as the tower closes for the night. The next day I head back, taking the monorail that was also built for the World’s Fair. It, too, is an anachronism of another age. The cars are original, but are in good shape. The daytime view is perhaps not quite as epic as the night, but still impressive. Three Tiny Planets from the observation deck of the Space Needle. From my Instagram. Geoffrey Morrison/CNET I check my map, and extrapolate from a few Instagram photos, where on the nearby hill I’d have to head to get a good view of the Needle and the city behind. Kerry Park seems easiest, and closest to a bus line. No way I’m walking up there. The view doesn’t disappoint. I return a few hours later, after dinner with a high school friend I haven’t seen in 20 years. This trip was a pretty good idea. The Space Needle lit at night is simply gorgeous. Spacebound Geoffrey Morrison/CNET As one of the most visited attractions on the West Coast, you don’t need me to tell you it’s a great spot. You can buy your tickets ahead of time, which is a bit of a gamble. Seattle is notorious for its cloud cover and regular drizzle, but on the other hand in the summer I can imagine the best times sell out. I’ll leave that decision up to you. If you can, arrive about an hour before sunset, then stay to see the lights of the city at night. The Space Needle’s height may no longer be impressive, but the whole point of a tower like this is for a good view, and you can still get that, not to mention the great view looking at it on the ground. Share your voice Culture Gaming 0 Post a comment Many gamers these days like to play online with friends. Discord helps them do that. Getty Images You may never have heard of Discord, but you might soon. The chat app built initially for gamers has been steadily expanding outside that world as it’s increasingly used by YouTube personalities, podcasters, hackers and more. Overall, the company says it counts more than 250 million registered users, or basically the same number of people who’ve signed up to play the cultural phenom Fortnight. More than 56 million people log in each month on the app, which marks its fourth anniversary Monday. “As Discord has grown, it’s gone mainstream,” the company said in a statement. Discord is praised for its sleek design, similar to business chat software Slack. Discord While it’s true the 165-person company has become popular outside of gaming, its most popular “servers” (or, chat rooms) are typically gaming related. The top server is for Fortnite, followed by a similar battle game Spellbreak, then Fortnite competitor PUBG. Microsoft’s world building game Minecraft, Supercell’s strategy game Clash Royale and Ubisoft’s Rainbow 6 military survival game are also popular. Its good-natured gaming roots and slick design have made it popular among gamers looking to easily chat with friends or organize a gaming session from across town or on another side of the world. It’s often called “Slack for gamers,” a reference to the similarly designed business software that’s expected to hold an initial public offering this year. But Discord has a darker side. White supremacists and hackers have gravitated to the platform, in part because of its ease of use and insufficient bureaucracy to track and punish them. That’s different from companies like Facebook and Twitter, which have employee bases many times larger than Discord’s and have taken a harder line, even using computer programs to identify and then excise bad actors from their communities. Still, San Francisco-based Discord is pushing forward. It’s launched a game sales service to compete with the likes of Fortnite maker Epic and Valve’s popular “Steam” store. The company declined to say how many games it’s sold through that effort. Tags
